From the Journal of Diana, Princess of Themyscira

"I knew the only way I could get behind this dark Pantheon was Orin, king of Alantis. My mother upon first learning that the people of Alantis had survived the great disaster (well almost half of them) sought to gain it as an ally and in 1843 (by man's standard of time ) Themyscira
and Alantis had signed a treaty to protect themselves against threats such as Crete.

It was in fact Orin who suggested to my mother that she send someone from Themyscira to observe the outside world. His people had from time to time but for the most part stuck to the depths of the ocean rather than interfere with the world of man. In the past each time someone did try to make contact it ended in tradgedy, be it directly such as pirates and the like or indirectly, because of the pollutants some of the modern ships would dump into the ocean. When my mother had told him that she had changed my role from observer to champion, the Alantean council agreed that they too should send a champion and who not better suited than their king.

Orin was king only in title, the powers of the Alantean monarchy had long been dwindled to almost nothing even before it sank and he jumped at the chance. His blonde hair (very uncommon) as well as his appearance looking more like a surface dweller (Alanteans come in several shades) and let's not forget the fact that he could survive outside of water for days, unheard of with alanteans, command sea life and a limited control over water, he was more than perfect.

The first time he made himself known to the surface world was preventing a US submarine carrying nuclear missles from being lost beneath the waves. The name he was going to call himself above the waters was the Mariner, but the media had dubbed him Aquaman before he had reached the surface with the sub.

Orin thus far has been my staunchest ally. Using sunken treasure to give me money to spend as I please, along with the a choice apartment very close to the harbor. Now in my hour of need I reach out to him and with the speed of seven sharks, he comes to my aid."
