  Van is the youngest lord of the Dark Houses and the only human...not quite.  Van has the ability, upon his death, to transfer his mind into his progeny.  This talent involves a mental battle between the two minds.  Van's father had done so since the middle ages but Van managed to defeat his sire and now control his house (in a younger body).  Van is the most ambitious of all the House Lords.  He is helping Nun capture Elena so he can sire a child with her that will have supernatural gifts and hopefully immortality.  Van is well aware that one his children could unseat him just as he did his father and although he keeps a stable of women pregnant with his seed and has sired over 40 children, he fears the jump from body to body.  His last (and his first jump) almost resulted in him losing, so his ambition and want for Elena are fueled by his fear.
